The History and Mission of SERVE

The History and Mission of SERVE

Jesus tell us in Mark 12:29-31 that the most important “...is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

At SERVE it is our desire and mission to demonstrate the love of Christ in this same way: to SERVE with all our HEART, SOUL, MIND and STRENGTH.

Origins
SERVE was founded in 1993 at the U.S. Center for World Missions. SERVE’s “Transformational Volunteer Missions” emphasis embodies the Church’s responsibility to create life-giving change in the name of Jesus Christ. SERVE collaborates with parachurch, denominational and mission organizations worldwide, providing a direct and holistic response to vital requests from the field, mobilizing volunteers of every generation in short-term mission projects, intercessory prayer, and financial giving.
"Not long after my arrival home, I received an invitation to serve on the administrative board of an exciting new organization called SERVE (Sending Experienced Retired Volunteers Everywhere). It was discovered that, for the most part, retirees were an untapped source in churches. The idea was to recruit those who were retired, and, through the use of computer database, match skills with mission service opportunities in the United States and overseas. Although targeted at retired volunteers, anyone interested in volunteer work could join. Many of my future mission trips were sponsored through the SERVE organization"-Christ's Globe-Trotter: The Legacy of Edward (Ted) Pollock by Ted Pollock with Beverly Reeve
